Educator Workshops
National campaign
Now that the distribution of one free copy of the Ollie’s Island CD ROM to every school in Australia is complete, a national campaign is underway to hold professional development workshops to maximise the use of the Ollie Programs in classroom activities. The following is a description of the workshops carried out to date.
- 5th April 2008 – South East South Australia - Environmental Education Workshop about Climate Change at the Naracoorte Caves. Approximately 25 Educators attended the Ollie session.
- 1st April 2008 – AWA WEN 3rd National Education Conference – Delivered a workshop to approximately 20 Water Educators from Councils around Australia. All delegates to the Conference received a free copy of the Ollie’s Island CD ROM thanks to the generous support of the Australian Water Association.
- 7th January 2008 - The National Association of Agriculture Educators – Deakin University – 1 workshop at this national conference for approx. 30 Educators.
- 30th November 2007 – Melbourne - Geography Teachers Association of Victoria Professional Development Conference – Monash University. Demonstrated the Ollie’s Island Program to Geography teachers and managed to inspire each of them to use it as part of their classroom activities for the coming year.
- 26th November 2007 – Canberra - Waterwatch Conference at the Australian National University. Professional Development session for water educators to show how they can use the Ollie’s Island program in their educational activities.
- 31st August 2007 – Melbourne – Victorian Association of Environmental Education Community Conference – Spoke at this conference to demonstrate how the Ollie’s Island Program can be used in community outreach activities.
- 31st August 2007 – Melbourne - Victorian Association of Agricultural Educators Conference – Spoke to approximately 40 educators about ho to best use the program in their classroom activities.
- 24th August 2007 – Melbourne - Science Teachers Assoc of Victoria Conference - A professional development session for geography teachers to demonstrate its application in their subject area. Approx. 15 educators.
- 14th August 2007 – Melbourne - Geography Teachers Association of Victoria Conference. A professional development session geography teachers to demonstrate its application in their subject area. Approx. 12 educators.
- 8th June 2007 - The Annual Geography Teachers’ Association of South Australia Conference held in Hindmarsh Adelaide. A Train the Teacher Workshop was delivered to 25 Geography Teachers.
- 31st May – Water Education Network, Sydney. A Train the Trainer Workshop was delivered to 25 Water Educators in NSW. The Australian Water Association hosted this workshop and recommended that all participants use the Ollie programs in their community/classroom activities.
- 10th May – Department of Primary Industries Victoria, Melbourne. A Train the Trainer workshop was delivered to 4 key people in the Victorian Landlearn Team. They were thrilled with the program and will recommend it in all of their outreach activities.
- 30th April - Central Queensland Forest Association – Anne Stunzner, a local Forest Educator, gave a Train the Teacher workshop to 20 teachers using the Ollie’s Island CD ROM. This workshop was part of her forest education outreach and was incorporated in a schools science day with CSIRO. (Note: Anne received training in how to best deliver this workshop in a telephone based instruction session.)
- 4th – 8th March 2007 - Sydney – OzWater Conference in association with the Australian Water Association (AWA). 5 Workshops were held for Water Educators Network members and general conference participants.
- 14th March 2007 - Queensland Chapter of the Australian Association of Environmental Education, Brisbane Conference. 1 Workshop session for 40 environmental educators was delivered.
- 4th December 2006 - Geography Teachers Association of Victoria Professional Development Conference – Monash University. Demonstrated the Ollie’s Island Program to 30 Geography teachers and managed to inspire each of them to use it as part of their classroom activities for the coming year.
- 25th September 2006 - Centre for Education and Research into Environmental Strategies (CERES) (Melbourne). Train the Trainer session with 5 key players in the National Sustainable Schools Initiative. They were all impressed with the content of the program and we are now working together to get the program accepted as a resource for this national initiative.
- 14th August 2006 - Geography Teachers Association of Victoria Conference, Melbourne. Train the Trainer session were delivered to a class of 25 geography teachers to demonstrate Ollie’s Island application in their subject area.
- 18-21 April 2006 - Australian Water Association’s second National Water Education Conference, Alice Springs. Presentation of the Ollie’s Island Program within the stream titled “Leading the Way” - highlighted the program’s waters issues within the concept of sustainable consumption.
- 8- 12th January 2006 - The biannual Australian Geography Teachers Association Conference, Launceston. Presentation to a group of 12 geography teachers – to show how the program’s content is relevant to the subject of geography.
