Australian Coal Association
The Australian Coal Association (ACA) is the industry body representing the interests of the black coal producers in New South Wales and Queensland, the states that produce 98% of Australia's black coal.
A major objective of the ACA is to promote and facilitate the uptake of clean coal technologies in Australia. The ACA provides the Secretariat for the COAL21 initiative (www.coal21.com.au), which is a partnership of the coal and electricity industries, state and Commonwealth governments and the research community focussed on eliminating greenhouse gas emissions arising from the use of coal in electricity generation.
Mining of black coal is one of Australia's most important industries.
Black coal provides more than 50% of Australia's electricity and is
vital for major industries such as steel making and cement manufacturing.
Australia is the world's largest coal exporter, and black coal is Australia's
largest commodity export, worth around $A14 billion in 2004.
