Energy Activities
The Australian Greenhouse Office
Much
of the electricity that Australians currently use is made by burning fossil
fuels such as oil, natural gas, coal and petrol - creating this form of
electrical energy releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Additional
greenhouse gases can cause climate change and, in Australia, energy use
makes up about 55% of Australia's total greenhouse gas emissions.
On behalf of the Commonwealth Government the Australian Greenhouse Office
(AGO) encourages the development of other forms of energy from sources
that will not run out and that do not cause problems for the natural environment
and human health. These include solar power, wind power and water power
(from waves and tides).
The AGO web site has information about all sorts of renewable energies
as well as information about global warming and climate change. It also
links you to fact sheets about alternative energy. Here, too, you can
find the Global Warming Cool It! and Your Home booklets filled with ideas
about saving energy in the home and at school. See www.greenhouse.gov.au/education.
