Mitre 10 Junior Landcare Grant – Successful recipients from 2003
The content of the Ollie Saves the Planet Program forms the basis of
the educational component of the Mitre 10 Junior Landcare Grants Program
and in 2003 there has been some fantastic grant applications. All in
all there were approximately 270 successful applications in 2003 each
receiving up to $500 for projects in schools and communities across Australia.
Here are some examples of successful projects;
- South Australia – a local school promoted environmental awareness
amongst the weekly tourists on the ‘Proud Mary’ Paddle
steamer.
- Victoria
- The “Kids on Campus” organisation developed
preschool children’s knowledge about growth and development of
native flora.
- NSW - Corinella Public school established an Aboriginal
garden within the school grounds to help students study aspects
of Aboriginal culture
whilst enhancing their understanding of local environmental issues.
- Tasmania - The Woodbridge District High school rehabilitated school
wetlands and restored an abandoned greenhouse on the site to use
for plant propagation.
- Western Australia - Byford Primary preserved a 2.3
hectare bush reserve.
- Northern Territory - Living Waters Primary school
regenerated sections of their school grounds with a focus on recreating
soil, landscape and
different desert habitats.
- Queensland - Roma Scouts and Guides raised
the community’s awareness
of the importance of stormwater quality, the effect of pollution
in stormwater and the environmental concerns of stormwater entering
waterways.
