What is Aluminium?
Aluminium is the third most common element in the Earth's crust. It
is found in the ground in a chemical form called aluminium oxide, or
alumina. In this form, it does
not look like a metal. Alumina is mined out of the ground in a rock
called bauxite, which also contains
iron oxides and clay.
Aluminium was discovered about 200 years ago, but it has taken many
years of research to develop a way to separate the alumina from the
bauxite to produce a useful metal.
Aluminium is easy to recycle and can be combined with raw materials
to make many new products.
