How Waste Decomposes
Many of the materials we use today are designed to be strong and long-lasting. Unfortunately,
this means that if they enter the waste stream and end up in landfill, they take a long time to
decompose.
Things decompose at different rates depending on their environment. For example metal objects
decompose faster in the sea than they do in a landfill. Plastic objects also decompose faster if
they are exposed to UV rays of the sun. Plants decompose faster if they are in a warm, wet
environment, like a compost bin.
