Keeping Cullet Clean

Crushed glass that is ready to be recycled is called cullet. Glass factories must be very careful about the quality of the cullet they use to make new glass. If any metal gets mixed in with the molten glass, the new glass will break easily. Also, metal in the glass furnace can cause a lot of damage.

The colour of glass cannot be removed by heating in the furnace. That's why colour separation is important. If cullet colours are mixed and recycled together, the new glass would all look the same colour - brownish green!
