Different Types of Glass

Some things look and feel like glass, but they are not made with the same ingredients as glass bottles and jars. Window glass, mirrors, drinking glasses, dishes, flowerpots, Pyrex cooking dishes and ceramics cannot be melted down and mixed with glass containers. These materials can severely damage furnaces and other machines in the glass factories, and ruin whole batches of cullet.

Some types of flat glass, such as car windscreens and window glass, are sometimes recycled into road beads and abrasives. But they must not be mixed with other recyclable glass or put out for kerbside collection. If you want to find out whether you can recycle other types of glass in your area, contact your local council.

But remember - only glass bottles and jars go in your recycling bin!
