Turning Waste into Energy
Waste can be used to produce electricity in one of two ways:
- A waste to energy plant burns rubbish to produce heat and power.
The volume of rubbish is reduced by 90%, which saves on the amount
of landfill space needed. These power plants use pollution control
equipment to control the amount of emissions going into the air.
- In most landfill sites, plant and animal material decomposes
to produce methane gas. This gas is piped out of the ground and used
to generate electricity. A landfill site can produce gas for many
years.
However it is much better not to produce waste in the first place. Then we don’t need to go to the
expense and effort to get rid of it.
