StormwaterThe gutters from our roofs and the gutters along the roads feed into a separate set of drains called the stormwater system. These drains are meant to take the rain away and prevent local flooding. This water is not treated and flows directly into rivers or the sea. Unfortunately, this means that any dog droppings, cigarette butts and other litter that is dropped on the footpath will also end up in our waterways and oceans. Oil and other chemicals can also be washed off the roads and into stormwater drains. It is very important not to pour chemical paints, oils and detergents down the drain. Contact your local council instead to find out how to dispose of them safely.
