Recycling Shoes
The NRC has recently joined with Nike to bring an unique recycling program
to 25 communities across the United States. Under the Reuse-a-Shoe Program,
community recycling centers which are members of the NRC will be able
to add used athletic footwear to their existing recycling programs. These
shoes are collected by Nike, and sliced and grinded up to make Nike Grind
material, which is then used in sports surfaces.
Since its inception in 1993, the Reuse-A-Shoe program has recycled more
than 13 million pairs of shoes, and has used the recycled material to
help donate over 100 athletic courts, tracks, fields and playground surfaces
to communities around the world. With the Program now being expanded
to include NRC members, 19 recycling organizations, from Portland, Oregon,
to Atlanta, Georgia, have already committed to collecting a minimum of
5,000 pairs of old athletic shoes each in the first six months of the
Program.
Our partnership with Nike is an excellent example of how manufacturers,
retailers, consumers, and recycling professionals can all work together
to close the recycling loop, and create environmental, economic and community
benefits.
