Biodiversity – Facts and Figures
- Not all the world’s species have been discovered yet, but scientists
believe that there could be as many as 100 million species on the
planet.
- It is predicted that 1 in 4 mammal species and 1 in 8 bird species
could risk extinction in the near future. The populations of all of
these species are expected to fall by at least one fifth in the next
10 years.
- There are currently over 16,000 species of plants and animals listed
as threatened species by the
International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.
- At the present rates of extinction, the Earth could lose as many
as one-fifth of all known species by 2025.
