Overfishing

For as long as humans have been around, we have used the oceans and rivers to give us food. In the past, communities of fishers would use traditional fishing methods to catch enough fish to feed themselves and sell some for money, while still leaving plenty in the sea. However, as fishing boats have become larger, and people have started using huge nets and lines, more and more fish are being caught.

In the last 50 years, bigger boats and new technology have made it easier and easier to catch fish. Sonar is used to track down schools of fish, and huge nets, many miles long, are used to catch millions of fish at one time. Baby fish are also being caught, before they have a chance to grow and reproduce. The number of many fish populations in the sea is getting smaller and smaller. Some fish species are close to disappearing forever, or becoming extinct. Local fishers are losing their jobs as they can’t catch enough fish to compete with the big fishing companies.
