The Litter ProblemLitter can be dangerous — it attracts bacteria and pests, and can be a fire hazard. Some litter, like broken glass and syringes, can be very harmful to both people and animals. And other types of litter, like cigarette butts, can contain harmful chemicals that can be leached into the ground and water. Litter is expensive — local governments spend a lot of money each year to clean up litter from our streets, parks, rivers and woodlands. Most litter on our streets comes from people dropping trash onto the footpath and into gutters, and from people throwing trash out of car windows. Full garbage cans also produce litter - litter can fall out or cans can be knocked over by animals.
