Litter in Our Oceans

Litter dropped on our streets is washed into the gutters and stormwater drains. This flows into rivers and the sea. In fact, most of the litter on our beaches actually comes from our streets. Litter makes water unsightly and dangerous to swim in.

It also affects ocean wildlife like fish, turtles, seals and seabirds. Many creatures die by choking on bits of litter in the water or being strangled by garbage. Pieces of fishing line and tackle, plastic bags, metal ring-pulls, and cigarette butts are all particularly dangerous for sea animals.
