Recycling WaterThe clean effluent produced in wastewater treatment plants can be reused to irrigate city parks, athletic fields, agricultural land, and residential lawns. It is known as 'reclaimed water' and has even been used to create artificial lakes in some places. The biosolids produced in the treatment process are very rich in nutrients and can be dried out and used as a fertilizer or soil conditioner. It is essential to make sure that all the bacteria and chemicals are removed first though, and this can be an expensive process. You can help by never letting any solid waste, chemicals or fats and oils from cooking go down the kitchen sink. The cleaner the wastewater, the easier it is to recycle.
