Saving Water at Home
We can do a lot to save and conserve the quality of water by remembering the
4R’s. Use these practical tips to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rethink
water use in your home:
- Check all water faucets
and water-using appliances and devices for leaks. Fixing these leaks
both inside and outside will save large amounts of water and money each year.
- Read
your water bill carefully and understand your pattern of water use.
Carry out a water audit of the home and keep watching your water bills to
see if
you
have decreased the amount of water you use.
- When
buying a water-using appliance, be sure to choose one that is water
efficient. If you need help, check with your local water provider to get
information
on the most water efficient brands available.

In the bathroom:
- Turn off the faucet while brushing
your teeth.
- Don't take long showers - 5 minutes
will get you clean.
- Install water efficient
showerheads and faucets.
- Try to take a shower
instead of a bath.
- If you do have a bath, only
fill your bathtub halfway.
- If you have an old
toilet - made before 1993 - your toilet could be using between
3.5 and 8 gallons of water every
time you flush it! To really cut down on your household water
use, replace your old-style toilet with a new water efficient model, which
will
use only
1.6 gallons per flush. If this isn't possible, then ensure your
toilet isn't wasting additional water by regularly checking for and fixing
leaks.
