Water Use in the United States

Just over half of the drinking water used in the United States comes from under the ground. Wells are drilled into underground aquifers and groundwater is pumped to the surface. The rest of the drinking water we use comes from reservoirs, lakes and rivers.

On average we use 100 gallons of drinking water per person every day!

Only a small amount of this drinking water supplied to us is actually used for drinking. Most of it is used for washing, cooking, cleaning clothes and dishes, flushing the toilet and watering the garden. And most of this water ends up as wastewater.

U.S. EPA, Office of Groundwater and Drinking Water, 2002.
