FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 19 March 2004Ollie International School Program in Summit County ClassroomsOllie, an environmental character developed in Australia, has arrived in Summit County. Barberton and Tallmadge students are excited about working with the interactive environmental computer program, Ollie’s World. The Summit/Akron Solid Waste Management Authority (SASWMA) is proud to introduce this progressive pilot project with the help of Mrs. Melissa Gunsett, a fifth grade educator at Portage Elementary School in Barberton, Ohio and Mrs. Carol Arbour, a sixth grade educator at Tallmadge Middle School. Students will be corresponding with Australian students by sharing hard data about their community regarding recycling, waste and waste reduction, biodiversity, water and energy. Students will be asked to monitor an area of their choice, enter data on a web page, which they help create, and eventually compare data from around the world. “This global approach allows Summit County students to experience first hand cultural diversity and educ ates them on what other countries are doing to protect our world,” states SASWMA’s Executive Director , Yolanda Walker. All areas covered on the Ollie’s World interactive CD-Rom follow the State of Ohio Content Standards. Portage Elementary School Principal, Ruby Bell explained, “As a state standard based program this project will truly benefit teachers and students while focusing great emphasis on cultural diversity which is important.” To find out how you can get Ollie into your classroom, contact:
