Turning Waste into Energy

Waste can be used to produce electricity in one of two ways:

  • A waste to energy plant burns trash to produce heat and power. The volume of trash is reduced by 90%, which saves landfill space. These power plants use pollution control equipment to manage the amount of emissions going into the air.

  • In most landfill sites, plant and animal material decomposes to produce methane gas. This gas can be piped out of the ground and used to generate electricity. A landfill site can produce gas for many years.

Remember that although waste can be used to produce energy, it is much better for the environment to not produce the waste in the first place. Then we don’t need to go to the expense and effort to get rid of it.
