Burning Fossil FuelsFossil fuels are burnt to provide heat, fuel for transport, and electricity. Without pollution control devices, burning fossil fuels can release large amounts of poisonous gases into the atmosphere, which contribute to air pollution in our cities, and acid rain. Burning fossil fuels also releases a gas called carbon dioxide. Many scientists believe that this gas is slowly causing the Earth to heat up, through a process called the greenhouse effect. We must try to reduce our use of fossil fuels by using less energy and finding alternatives when possible. More information on What is Air Pollution
