What is Steel?, continued

The properties of steel are changed by adding other chemical elements. Manganese is added to steel to increase toughness, tungsten and cobalt are added to make steel hard and carbon is added to make it hard but not brittle (or easy to break).

One problem that affects steel is that it reacts with air and water. This process is called corrosion, or rusting.
