Reduce Activities
Reducing Industry Emissions
The Australian pulp and paper industry has produced a strong and sustained
reduction in its emissions. During the period 1995-2000, for each net
tonne of pulp and paper produced, we have:
- Reduced our energy consumption by 37%.
- Reduced our output of carbon dioxide by 16%.
- Reduced our water usage by 35%.
- Reduced our output of biological oxygen demand by 47%.
- Reduced our output of total suspended solids by 5%.
- Reduced our output of dioxins and furans to below the levels established
in the Commonwealth Environmental Guidelines for New Bleached Eucalypt
Kraft Pulp Mills.

Paperlinx - Reducing their Impact
The papermaking process requires large volumes of water. All four PaperlinX
paper mills aim to reduce the consumption of raw water and maximise recycling,
consistent with the needs of the papermaking process.
The mills also treat effluent in a manner appropriate to the receiving
waters. Chemicals used in the pulping process are reclaimed and the waste
lignin burned in recovery furnaces to provide energy.
Discharges to both water and air are controlled and monitored. In addition,
all PaperlinX mills are audited regularly by both internal company auditors
and external consultants.
The mills also have well-established consultative committees that include
local residents and community groups. These committees provide PaperlinX
with valuable feedback on the potential impact of the company's operations
- such as noise, odour and local environmental quality - on their neighbours.
