Paper Industry: a good neighbour
Amcor's Fairfield Mill in Melbourne, Victoria, has set up a Neighbourhood
Consultative Committee (NCC) to develop and monitor progress on the Mill's
Environment Improvement Plan (EIP) - a key tool in promoting continuous
environmental improvement, and identifying a framework for practical application
of ideas.
The NCC is part of Amcor's management of its operations to minimise adverse
impact on local residents and maintain transparency with the community.
It includes two staff from the Mill, eight community members, two representatives
of the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and two representatives
from the local council.
The Mill's first EIP was developed by the NCC in 1998, with quarterly
meetings to discuss progress on actions and environmental concerns. Community
representatives play a key role in identifying issues impacting outside
the Mill boundaries, such as odour and noise impacts, while Amcor representatives
review and report back the range of process improvements and/or limitations
available to reduce the environmental impact.
The company also recognises the need to keep the wider community in touch
with the company's activities, with wider communication achieved through
the production of regular newsletters, periodic open days, media information
and the use of community networks.
