Waste Activities
Industry and Businesses
The Australian Government works with businesses to reduce their waste,
by encouraging them to find new ways to:
- Reduce the amount of waste they produce
- Recycle the materials they use, such as building materials, and
- Dispose of waste, such as oil, safely
Litter
As part of our Clean Seas program, Kingscliff High School students have
helped the Tweed Shire Council to find out what kind of rubbish is washed
down the drain into the local Cudgen Creek.
Cudgen Creek runs through Kingscliff in Northern NSW and many families
come here for their holidays. But litter found on the beach and floating
in the estuary spoils the fun. The litter is also harmful to the animals
and fish living near the beach.
The students helped place traps into the stormwater drains to stop the
rubbish reaching the creek. The students then looked at all the different
types of rubbish and worked out how much of each type was caught. They
were then able to tell local people how well the traps worked, what kind
of rubbish they had found and caused the biggest problems, and how to
keep the stormwater drains clean.
The Australian Government helped Kingscliff High School on this project
with an $85,000 grant from the Natural Heritage Trust Clean Seas Program.
