Big Swamp Wetland Project, SA

The Big Swamp Wetland Project is situated 20km north west of Port Lincoln
in South Australia. Big Swamp is recognised as a significant wetland area
of Australia and is important as a breeding area for a number of bird
species.
The group works on restoration, preservation and promotion of Big Swamp
Wetland. Funding from Mitre 10 has allowed the following projects to be
undertaken:
- The building of permanent and floating islands for bird life to nest
in. Islands will be able to be moved if nesting does not occur. The
islands will be planted with rushes, sedges and other native grasses.
- The construction of an Interpretive Centre at the parking bay featuring
an information display and bird hide. This will encourage interested
people to learn about and enjoy the wetland area by using the Interpretive
Centre, bird hide and picnic area.
- The prevention of siltation in the swamp by undertaking earthworks
to stop eroded material from entering the swamp.
