Australian Vinyls - Recycling Vinyl

Australian Vinyls participates in a post-consumer waste recycling program
called "Vinyl Cycle", which involves kerbside collection of
PVC (or 'vinyl') bottles.
After collection, the PVC bottles are processed, recycled, and then marketed
to existing PVC resin customers for use in practical everyday products
such as pipe fittings and floor tiles.
Vinyl Cycle was launched nationally by the Federal Minister for Environment,
Senator Robert Hill, in October 2000, together with the Vinyl Bottle Industry
Action Plan. Australian Vinyls is a signatory to the Action Plan, which
has been registered under the National Packaging Covenant. The main objective
of the Action Plan is to achieve a 25% recovery and recycling rate for
post domestic vinyl bottles.
Australian
Vinyls has been working with major sorting facilities to improve the volume
of collected bottles that are passed onto the recycler. Clear vinyl cordial
bottles are the most common type of PVC bottle used by consumers. Recyclable
PVC items carry the number 3 plastic identification code.
Vinnie Vinyl and Pippa Pipe are characters developed to represent the
Vinyl Cycle program and promote the recycling of PVC bottles. Vinnie
asks that households look for the PVC identification code and put PVC
bottles out for recycling.
Where councils do not accept PVC in their kerbside collection schemes,
Vinnie asks that households contact their local council and ask for it
to be included. Pippa Pipe represents the pipes and pipe fittings that
may be manufactured from these recycled PVC bottles.
