Recycle Activities
Together
with the newsprint manufacturer, Norske Skog Paper Mills (Australia) Limited,
we have developed national recycling plans for newspapers and magazines,
which have been endorsed by the Australia and New Zealand Environment
and Conservation Council (ANZECC).
Our most recent recycling plan, endorsed by ANZECC in July 2000, aims
to achieve two objectives by December 2005:
- To collect 250,000 tonnes of newspapers and magazines for recycling
every year by Norske Skog Paper Mills and the newspaper publishers;
and
- To achieve a recovery rate for old newspapers in Australia of 74%.
Newspaper
and magazine publishers have also donated $1 million worth of advertising
space every year for eight years to help government promote kerbside recycling.
We are committed to continuing this programme until 2005.
In 2001, 72.4% of newspapers in Australia were recycled. This makes Australia
one of the world leaders in the recycling of old newspapers - above the
USA at 71% (in 2000) and the UK at 56%.
Newspaper publishers in Australia have also signed long term contracts
to buy newsprint with recycled content.
