Mining for Fossil FuelsAll fossil fuels need to be mined from the ground where they were formed. Mining and transporting fossil fuels should be done carefully to avoid harming people, animals and the environment. Coal is mined from huge pits or extensive shafts and tunnels dug deep into the ground. Large amounts of rock containing coal are removed from the ground, and processed to take out any unwanted impurities. All the unwanted material must then be either dumped or stored. In the past, mining has been known to cause land, water and air contamination. These days, though, most mining activities must have an environmental program in place to reduce contamination and restore affected land. For these reasons, companies carrying out mining must now think very carefully about their actions and how they affect the surrounding environment.
