Recycling Water
The clean effluent produced
in wastewater treatment plants can be reused on city parks, sports grounds,
agricultural land, and gardens. The sludge produced is very rich in
nutrients and can also be dried
out and used as a fertiliser
or soil conditioner. It is essential to make sure that all the bacteria
and chemicals are removed first though, and this can be an expensive
process.
You can help by never letting any solid waste, chemicals or fats and oils from cooking go down
the kitchen sink. The cleaner the wastewater, the easier it is to recycle.
In some countries, like the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia, where there are cities with very
large populations and only a limited water supply, wastewater is even recycled back into drinking
water!
