Rethink
At the USPS, we understand that the only way to really change our impact
on the environment is to totally rethink the way we operate our business.
One of our most successful rethinking actions is new building design -
both inside and out - making our buildings more environmentally friendly.
The new USPS Green Buildings have many innovative features.
For example, some new post office buildings:
- Use fiberglass insulation in the walls with 25 percent recycled glass.
- Have thermal window frames that don't leak, making them more efficient
in holding heat in the winter and keeping the indoor space comfortable
in the summer.
- Incorporate alternative forms of energy for operations, including
solar and geothermal systems.
- Save money and use fewer resources by installing long-lasting lamps
with screw-in fluorescent lights.
- Use indigenous plants in landscaping, so they don't need as much water.
- Have water tanks to harvest rainwater from rooftops to reuse during
dry periods. This saves thousands of gallons of fresh water each year.
We've also changed many thousands of exit signs to run on a two-watt
circuit instead of two 15- to 20-watt bulbs. This has already saved hundreds
of thousands of dollars each year in electricity costs.
Wherever possible, we minimize the use of chemicals indoors - which is
healthier for employees. And we use fewer pesticides and fertilizers outdoors
to minimize pollution in nearby lakes and streams.
