What is Paper?
Paper is made up of a web of lots of tiny fibres. These fibres come
from various plants, depending on where the paper is made and what plants
are available. Trees are the main source of fibres, but straw, bamboo,
hemp and sugar cane (bagasse) are also used.
The first use of paper dates back to 4,000 years ago when people in
China created a type of cloth sheet to record their drawings and writings.
Paper from plant fibres was then developed in China in 105 AD by Tsai
Lun, an official at the Chinese Emperor’s court.
