Making Cardboard

All paper mills are different because of the types of paper they make. Some mills use old newspapers and magazines and turn them into new newsprint. Others take office paper and paper from printers and recycle it into new office paper or tissues. Other mills only take cardboard and recycle it into new cardboard. Office waste, newspapers and magazines can be recycled into new cardboard, but old cardboard can’t be used to make newsprint or office paper.

 Cardboard

Corrugated cardboard is made by putting three layers together – one on the top, one on the bottom and a crinkly one in the middle (called “fluting”) giving it strength. Another type of cardboard is called ‘folding boxboard’ and looks like a single layer, although it can be made up of several layers glued together. It is used in cereal boxes and similar packages.

Some of the cardboard is so strong people can make furniture, big containers and even dog kennels from it! This means you can even use recycled paper to make things that might otherwise be made from wood or metal.
