Reduce
Reusing pallets over and over again, instead of disposing of them after
use, prevents large amounts of solid waste from going to landfill. This
also reduces resource use and has a whole range of other benefits for
our environment. It saves energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions from
pallet manufacturing, and reduces air and water pollution associated
with the pallet manufacturing process.
By using the CHEP equipment pooling system, companies can:
|
Reduce Waste
Using reusable pallets instead of disposable pallets reduces the
amount of waste going to landfill sites by up to 99.5%. This saves
300,000 tons of solid waste - and the $17million needed to dispose
of it in landfills or incinerators. |
|
Reduce Energy Use
Using reusable pallets reduces energy consumption by 62%. This
is an energy saving of 424 billion BTU’s - the same amount
of energy that would be produced by burning about 17,000 tons of
coal! |
|
Reduce Greenhouse Emissions
Using reusable pallets reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 59%.
This is the greenhouse gas equivalent of burning about 46,000 tons
of coal. |
|
Reduce Water Pollution
Reusing pallets instead of manufacturing new ones saves about 7
tons of chloride compounds from being discharged into water bodies
around the country - protecting our water quality and our health. |
|
Reduce Air Pollution
Reusing instead of manufacturing also reduces air emissions. It
stops around 270 tons of sulfur gases (the main ingredient in acid
rain) from entering the atmosphere, as well as more than 43 tons
of air pollutant particulate - one of the contributing causes of
lung diseases like asthma and emphysema. |
