GREEN PURCHASING
The United States Federal Government has a preference program for buying
products that are energy and water efficient, biobased, made with recycled
content or have other positive environmental benefits. When looking at
environmentally preferable products and services, all aspects of the
product are taken into consideration, including things like raw materials,
production, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, reuse, operation,
maintenance, and disposal.
The White House Task Force on Waste Prevention and Recycling is working
with the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Agriculture
to assist Federal agencies to promote the purchase of these environmentally
preferable products.
So far, Federal agencies have conducted more than 30 ‘green’ pilot
programs, including: renovation of the Pentagon parking lot; building
construction; buying green cleaning products and services; and identifying
environmentally preferable paints, uniforms, and copier paper.
Buying
Biobased
The US Government is committed to reducing their impact on the environment
and decreasing their use of non-renewable resources. To achieve this
we have issued an Executive Order requiring all government departments
to buy and use biobased products where possible.
Biobased products are renewable agricultural products, made from plant
or animal material. Under the new law, all Federal agencies must give
preference to buying biobased products when they are available. The US
Department of Agriculture has developed guidelines to help Federal agencies
in buying biobased products - such as paper and packaging, fuel additives,
cleaning products, inks, building materials, compost and more.
Supporting biobased products protects the environment and helps our
nation by:
- Increasing the use of renewable products, which break down more easily
and safely in the environment;
- Decreasing the use of petrochemicals,
which are non-renewable and contribute to greenhouse gas production
and climate change;
- Creating new markets for farmers and encouraging
new technologies; and
- Promoting sustainable environmental stewardship.
