LITTER PREVENTION
"Plant Pride, Not Litter" is Ohio’s statewide litter
prevention and clean-up campaign, introduced in 2001.
It is considered
one of the best programs in the country and was recently awarded first
place at the national Keep America Beautiful conference in Washington
D.C. Keep America Beautiful is a nonprofit public education organization
dedicated to encouraging individuals to take responsibility for improving
their communities.
The national organization has more than 500 state,
county and city affiliate programs, including 34 programs in Ohio. The
national award marks the fourth time that the Ohio Division of Recycling & Litter
Prevention has been recognized by Keep America Beautiful.
The National Soft Drink Association (NSDA) also recognized the “Plant
Pride, Not Litter” campaign with a first place in the NSDA Comprehensive
Litter Prevention Awards program. The goal of this awards program is
to recognize and reward innovative efforts to protect the land and prevent
litter.
Litter Summits are important components of the "Plant Pride, Not
Litter" campaign. These are planning sessions that bring together
community, civic, government and business leaders to design a comprehensive
litter prevention and enforcement plan for their community.
The plans
can include activities such as education programs for schools, public
awareness campaigns for the community, increases in law enforcement,
and cleanup programs for problem areas. Measuring the impact, educational
value and cost effectiveness of a community’s litter prevention
program and reporting those results back to the community is also very
important and keeps the community involved.
Lucky
the Ladybug is Ohio’s
First Lady of litter prevention! She is the centerpiece of our anti-litter
campaign for children aged 5-11. Lucky the Ladybug visits county fairs,
special events, parades and litter
cleanup activities in communities across Ohio to spread her litter prevention
message.
You can find her fun activity book “Lucky’s Adventures
in Litterville” on our website.
