RECYCLE
Ohio’s Recycling Industry
Recycling isn’t just good for Ohio’s environment, it’s
good for business too. Ohio firms are industry leaders in the research
and development of systems for recycling material into new products.
Ohio’s recycling industry supports 169,000 jobs with an annual
payroll of $6 billion. Sales reach $30 billion annually. The recycling
industry also encourages investment in the State and supports our government
through annual tax revenues and fees totalling more than $650 million.
The most common market materials used in Ohio are aluminum, glass, paper,
plastic and steel. Every year, 13 million tons of these materials are
recycled, saving:
- 53.5 million barrels of oil;
- 478.6 billion tons of BTU’s/energy;
- 8.7 billion tons of greenhouse
gases; and
- 46.6 million cubic yards of landfill space.
Our recycling industry also imports another 16 million tons of waste
materials from other states, and processes them here in Ohio. This 30
million tons of materials recycled each year saves $877 million in avoided
disposal costs.
