Community Recycling and Litter Prevention Grant
The Division of Recycling & Litter
Prevention offers the Community Recycling and Litter Prevention Grant
to counties, solid waste districts,
and large-population cities to implement programs aimed at solid waste
reduction, recycling, recycling market development and litter prevention.
The Grants are divided into the following categories:
- Buy Recycled - for
the purchase of durable products containing a minimum of 20% recycled-content
material for use in public facilities.
- Recycling and Source Reduction
- to support recycling and source reduction for various residential,
public facility and commercial recycling
activities.
- Material Recovery Facility (MRF) - to offset MRF development
and operation costs.
- Litter Collection - to clean litter from highway
right-of-ways, parks, waterways, or other publicly-owned areas.
- Community
Outreach - to promote an understanding of recycling, litter prevention,
and source reduction within the community
through education
and public awareness campaigns.
CASE STUDY: Butler County
Butler County has successfully delivered a range of activities under
Ohio’s grant system, with the following accomplishments.

Recycling and Source Reduction:
- Provided four recycling drop-off
facilities for over 3,200 residents.
- Collected more than 1.5
tons of recyclables through curbside recycling programs.
- Reached
an overall recycling rate of 46%.

Buy Recycled:
- Facilitated the purchase of almost $13,000 worth
of recycled-content products, including public park benches and
picnic tables.

Litter Collection:
- Cleaned up 220 miles of highways and roadways
in the county.
- Facilitated 12 other special litter collection
events.
- Collected a total of 13 tons of litter, 1 ton of which
was recycled.

Community Outreach:
- Delivered 359 classroom presentations to
over 8,000 students in Butler County, and entertained almost
15,000 students with educational activities such as
poster contests and science fairs.
- Staffed four special events, providing
recycling and litter prevention information to over 5,000 residents.
