COMMUNITIES
The
Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Recycling & Litter
Prevention collects data on recycling opportunities across Ohio.
Current statistics show that there are over 1,500 drop-off sites and
more than 550 curbside programs in Ohio.
In addition to traditional recycling
programs, special collections have been established for appliances,
electronics, phone books, tires, batteries, yard waste and household
hazardous wastes.
A recent study showed that commercial waste is also rich with materials
that can be recycled. As a result of the study, a number of communities
and solid waste districts began to work with commercial organizations
to recycle and reduce the amount of materials they were sending to landfill.
Funded through the ODNR grant program in 2003, these efforts resulted
in 114 tons of materials being recycled from 270 schools, over 200
office facilities and almost 100 retail outlets and shopping malls.
It is often difficult for smaller, more isolated communities to achieve
the recycling rates possible in our large cities.
However, the following
case studies show that with dedication and enthusiasm, large and small
communities can make big changes.
