Sustainability Programs, continued
Air
We understand the impact greenhouse gas emissions have had on the changing
global climate and are committed to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions
to 25% below the 1990 baseline worldwide by 2010. This is a significant
commitment and one which shows the corporate stewardship of the total
Alcoa family.

Biodiversity
Our current environmental objective is to establish self-regenerating
Jarrah forest ecosystems by replacing removed topsoil after mining and
by direct seeding. We use just over 3kg of seed per hectare, which returns
about 65 species of plants to the mined areas, costing about $1000 per
hectare.
As a result of our program:
- More than 80% of floral species, including all the dominant tree species,
are currently being successfully re-established, with a target of 100%
species diversity.
- The rehabilitated areas are rapidly recolonised by native insects,
and as they mature they become increasingly used by animals and birds.
