Water Activities
Carter Holt Harvey - Reusing Water

Carter Holt Harvey have shown how the use of innovative technology in
tissue manufacture can reduce the consumption of fresh water while still
maintaining productivity.
The company wanted to reduce the amount of fresh water consumed and the
amount of wastewater produced on a tissue machine. One machine shower
in particular used 60,000 litres of fresh water per hour.
Shutting the shower down was not an option, as it was vital to the efficient
operation of the machine and must stay in perfect working order at all
times. So Carter Holt Harvey decided to convert the shower from fresh
water to clarified water. Clarified water is water that has already been
used in a paper machine and undergone a filtering process to remove larger
particles.
However, the company needed to ensure that the shower operated correctly
using the clarified water - that is, at the correct flow and pressure
without any nozzle blockages.
The solution was to install a new shower body on the machine which uses
an internal cleaning brush to periodically clean the nozzles and shower
pipe. A bleed valve also opens momentarily during the shower pipe cleaning
cycle to allow any debris in the pipe to flow into the drain.
Carter Holt Harvey was able to successfully implement this project, resulting
in a reduction of fresh water consumption, whilst still maintaining efficient
operation of the shower and paper machine.
