Introduction
The letters that arrive in our mailbox at home are an important part
of our lives. Even in the age of the telephone, the fax machine and the
Internet, most families receive dozens of letters each week.
In towns, cities and remote locations across Australia, posties deliver
mail on foot, pushbikes, motorbikes, and in trucks and vans. Australia
Post people carry every kind of letter and parcel to and from businesses,
family and friends. In fact, in any one year, Australia Post delivers
over 4,900,000,000 (4.9 billion) mail items throughout Australia.
Since Australia’s first official post office opened in Sydney
in 1809, Australia Post has been committed to delivering one of the best
mail and parcel services in the world.
From humble beginnings as a one-person operated facility, Australia
Post has become one of the largest and most successful organisations
in Australia. We have played an important part in Australian history,
and continue to be an active member of local communities.
Australia Post does much more than deliver the mail. With almost 4,500
postal outlets, we are also Australia’s largest retailer and financial
services provider, and are committed to protecting the environment in
the course of providing these services.
With the support and involvement of our staff, we have put in place
a full Environment Management System, which focuses on the environmental
impacts of our everyday operations. We have also signed up to the Federal
Government’s Greenhouse Challenge program. As a result, we are
reducing our greenhouse gas emissions in the form of waste, energy and
fuel usage, and reducing our impact on the environment.
