Recycling - continued
Green Packaging
As a member of the Buy Recycled Business Alliance, Australia Post has
a major commitment to recycling.
We use recycled materials in packaging
(most Postpak products are made of recycled material or are fully recyclable),
our retail carry bags are made of fully recyclable low density polyethylene
and envelopes in our stationery range are made of 60 per cent recycled
paper.
Wherever possible, we re-use packaging such as cardboard boxes, and
have reduced the weight of packaging products, such as in our Express
Post and Parcel Post satchels.
We are also a signatory to the Federal Government’s National Packaging
Covenant, which means we are committed to achieving environmental benefits
through:
- better packaging design
- more efficient production and distribution
- recycling of waste
- use of recycled materials
- and working with suppliers and customers to
reduce waste and increase both our own and consumer recycling.
A New Use For Corks - and Posties’ Buggies
Posties’ buggies – usually used to deliver mail – have
been donated to an innovative recycling initiative that is reducing ‘commercial
waste’ and creating employment opportunities for people who face
barriers to employment.
The ‘Green Collect’ program – created by BP Australia – collects
wine and champagne corks (in the posties’ buggies) from Melbourne
restaurants and function centres – and sends them to be recycled
into cork floor tiles, which BP then intends to purchase and use in their
service stations.
Cork is a valuable natural resource that can be recycled and reused.
Currently only 6% of corks are being recycled, with the remainder going
to landfill.
