Introduction
Melbourne is especially fortunate to have a very high quality of water
- the majority of reservoirs which supply water to Melbourne are protected
closed catchments, meaning that the area cannot be used for residential,
business or recreational purposes.

Melbourne's protected water supply system provides high quality drinking
water
The State Government owns Victoria's water retailers - City West Water,
South East Water and Yarra Valley Water. City West Water supplies water
and sewerage services to approximately 605,000 people, with over 240,000
residential customers and around 28,000 non-residential customers - from
corner shops to major industry.
When City West Water was established in 1995, we took instant initiatives
to minimise our effects on the environment.
- The Board set up an Environmental Audit Committee to oversee our environmental
performance.
- An energetic Service Sustainability Department spearheads our conservation
and waste management work with real regard for the environment.
- We have an active in-house Eco Action Team who promote recycling,
energy reduction, and waste and water minimisation throughout the office.
- Avoiding environmental problems by maintaining our water mains and
sewers is a priority, especially as many of them are more than 100 years
old.

The Holden Water Tower - Some water towers look like
a giant golf ball on a tee (like this one). Water is pumped up into
them, then falls down from the top into the water supply system.
This is to provide suitable water pressure.
