Reusing and Recycling

All goods which are donated to Family Stores or collected by a Family Stores vehicle are taken to one of our 150 stores. There they are sorted by staff in the following way:

• Reusable items are placed in stores and sold to customers at affordable prices, or given to welfare recipients referred by The Salvation Army Family Support Services.
  
• Items which are unsuitable for our stores are categorised as 'mixed textiles'.
  
• Mixed textiles are then sent to The Family Stores Wholesale Division or other textile merchants, where they are recycled to become industrial wipers.
  
• Some donations, which are unusable, are sent directly to landfill.
