Marine Species Protection

The Government provides funds through Environment Australia to help protect our marine species such as dugongs, turtles, seabirds, whales, dolphins, sharks and fish. All these species are at threat from human impacts on our coasts and oceans. Some of the threats come from pollution of the water and from overfishing.

Some of the projects that we have funded are:

  • Where and when whales migrate and whale biology
  • Shark distribution and ecology
  • Turtle monitoring
  • Dugong protection.

Some stories about our projects can also be found on our website: www.ea.gov.au/coasts/index.html, together with information about ways that we can help to protect threatened species.
