The Commonwealth Government Natural Heritage Trust and the Australian
Government Envirofund provides support to help communities work on environmental
projects:
- The Natural Heritage Trust provides money to Aboriginal organisations
on the Cape York Peninsula so they can work with the government, using
their knowledge and skills to help protect the unique natural and cultural
environment they live in.
- The Trust provides materials to schools for children to learn about
threatened native plants and animals and organise activities to protect
their local habitats.
- Scouts in Melbourne received funding to revegetate the banks of a
suburban creek near their scout hall. The Scouts also earned their Landcare
badges through their contribution to protecting the environment.

| Mount Lofty Ranges Southern Emu-wren Recovery Program |
In South Australia a recovery program for Emu-wrens has provided the
birds with a much safer habitat thanks to efforts of volunteers, the Conservation
Council and funding from the Natural Heritage Trust to plant and fence
the birds habitat.
The Natural Heritage Trust is also helping to protect our biodiversity.
Using Natural Heritage Trust funding, almost 400,000 Australians have
become involved in conserving the environment in the past five years,
by:
- Planting 29 million seedlings;
- Replanting and protecting 780,000 hectares of native vegetation;
- Protecting or regenerating 480,000 hectares to conserve native species;
- Erecting 19,000 kilometres of protective fencing; and
- Protecting waterways with 5,000 kilometres of fencing.
