Rethink Activities, continued
State of the Environment ReportTo help Australians understand how the Australian environment is going, the Government produces a major report called 'State of the Environment'. Scientists help put the report together by measuring six key areas:
The 2001 State of the Environment (SoE) report says the key to Australia's sustainable future lies in all of us: our attitudes towards the environment, our heritage and each other. This means that it is not just the responsibility of governments or local councils to care for the environment - we are all equally responsible In 1996 the first SoE report made it clear that our most urgent task was to prevent many of our precious and unique animals, plants and their habitats from disappearing from the face of this land. The 2001 SoE report says the next urgent task for Australians is to protect the soil and water that sustains not only our many unique species, but also the people and prosperity of Australia. You can find the 1996 and 2001 State of the Environment reports at www.ea.gov.au/soe
