Introduction
What is Landcare?

Landcare began in 1986 as an initiative of the Victorian Government,
with the support of the Victorian Farmers Federation. In 1988, following
lobbying from the National Farmers Federation and the Australian Conservation
Foundation, the Commonwealth Government developed a national land management
program which included funding for community Landcare groups as a key
element.
Landcare is based on partnerships. Landcare groups, individuals, government,
schools, farmers, industry and the corporate sector are all working together
to tackle land and water degradation and develop sustainable use of our
natural resources. There are over 4,000 Landcare groups made up of voluntary
community members ranging from land managers dealing with salinity in
rural areas to inner-city school children revitalising a local creek.
Landcare works because it fosters community spirit and because Australians
have recognised an urgent need to care for our land and water.
