Introduction, continued
What is Coastcare?

Coastcare is all about local communities caring for their coast. Coastcare
volunteers (over 60,000 Australia wide) identify local problems and work
together to achieve practical solutions. Coastcare provides opportunities
for communities, indigenous groups, the business sector and governments
to become actively involved in the protection and management of Australia's
coastal and marine environment.

There are now over 2,000 Coastcare groups tackling problems such as dune
erosion, loss of native plants and animals, storm water pollution, weeds
and control of human access to sensitive areas. Many groups are also involved
in revegetating, building boardwalks and access paths, and removing weeds
and fencing dunes, as well as educating both visitors and locals.

Coastcare is a program of the Commonwealth Government's Natural Heritage
Trust, in partnership with State/Territory and Local Governments.
